This Dan mask originates from Ivory Coast and Liberia where they arrived in the eighth century B.C. The Dan mythology separates the world into two entirely separates spheres: the sphere of the village and the sphere of the forest. This wooden mask is one of the myriad types that personify the "Gle", or the spiritual force of the forest. This Okuyi Ceremonial mask originates from Southwest Gabon. The name Okuyi or mukudj represent ancestors' faces. The masks are worn during funerals and by a sorcerers. Typically, the mask have realistic, white or black faces with protruding lips, and eyes incised with a curve, high-domed foreheads, and characteristic rigid high coiffures reflecting the Punu women's hair styles. Many Punu mask can be recognised by raised diamond-shape scarification marks on the foreheads and on temples which are thought to be associated with a female ancestor.
