ABOUT THE JONEEBA™ AFRICAN DANCE TECHNIQUE

JONEEBA™ AFRICAN DANCE as a Total Body Workout

In Africa, dance is part of both secret rituals and everyday living. It is spiritual, religious and secular. It is purely for enjoyment and yet can be full of pomp and circumstance. African dance exists on so many planes because it addresses the physical, mental and spiritual needs of the individual and the community. It was there that Djoniba Mouflet first got addicted to the power and spirituality of African dance and drumming. He knew that he would share it with others one day and that is when the Joneeba™ African Dance technique took life.

Since then, Djoniba Mouflet has achieved guru-like status among the nearly ten thousand individuals who have studied with him world-wide over the years, and the many who currently over-crowd his class at the Djoniba Dance and Drum Centre five days a week. The key to Djoniba‘s class’ popularity and success is that the Joneeba™ African Dance Technique is designed to follow all the principles of exercise physiology for a complete body workout. It is a combination of three elements: A uniquely designed body stretching, strengthening, and toning warm-up; powerful West African dances done Djoniba Mouflet-style to the stimulating rhythm of the drums; and a methodical way of breaking down steps so that every person, including those who have never danced in their lives, can learn, sweat, and have fun.

Joneeba™ African Dance is what the spirit of African dance and drumming is about—individuality, freedom of expression. That spirit that allows all to dance with their own accentuation, flavor and soul. It’s a technique that is high-energy and fun yet easy to follow, incorporating breathing, exercises, stretches, balancing, high-impact aerobics, dance, meditation and fantastic drum music. Joneeba™ African Dance is an all-inclusive fitness program that fuses style and spirit. From a physical perspective, this technique is a whole–body workout—strengthening, toning and stretching all the muscle groups while conditioning the heart. For Muscular Strength and Tone, the warm-up exercises combined with the high-intensity dancing strengthen all the major muscle groups in the body. During the dancing, the many “thrusting” moves particularly strengthen the muscles important for excellent posture. When it comes to Flexibility, the Joneeba™ warm-up is designed so that the stretching exercises come second, after some initial exercises that get the blood flowing in the body and fluid flowing in the joints. This order is important for flexibility, because scientific studies show that optimal flexibility from stretching is achieved only after the muscle is already warm. As for Conditioning of the Heart, Joneeba™ is great for weight loss. After taking Joneeba™ classes regularly, if you have to run a couple of blocks because you are late for the bus, for example, you not only will run faster, but will also become less winded! Other cardiovascular benefits include lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and decreased symptoms of such conditions as asthma.

As a balance to the physical part of the workout, there is also the spiritual component of Joneeba™, that is its hypnotic power through the drum and the rhythm, which is the foundation and core of the movements. The rhythm excites, prods, lulls, captivates, pulls, envelops, and inspires you to continue on. Here, the mystical part of the Joneeba™ journey begins to unfold. The ancient rhythm of the drums merge with the rhythm of your spirit, making you move with a freedom that you’ve never
experienced before. This is the magic of Joneeba™ African Dance!
